What is hormonal balance and how does it help with weight loss?
Women in particular have found hormone balancing to be beneficial to improve their overall health and well being. For women who experience premenstrual syndrome, otherwise known as PMS, hormone balancing afforded them a decrease in their symptoms.
Estrogen and progesterone are integral to a woman's health.
The two main female sex hormones are estrogen and progesterone. When they’re balanced, most of us feel really great.
When they become imbalanced you experience general symptoms such as foggy thinking, low libido, depression, fatigue, and/or weight gain in the hips or waist. These are all symptoms of estrogen dominance.
We need much more progesterone than estrogen. Our environment is saturated with xenoestrogens, chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body. (Xeno means “foreign,” because they come from outside of the body.) a few places that xenoestrogens are found:
- Mercury in seafood is considered a metalloestrogen, AKA a metal that can act like estrogen.
- Bisphenol-A or BPA, found in many plastics, has been shown to activate estrogen receptors.
- Parabens and phthalates, found in many skincare and cosmetic products, are considered exogenous sources of estrogen which can disrupt proper hormone signaling.
It’s a challenge to be hormonally balanced these days, but smart women don’t lose hope. Instead, they proactively care for themselves, because they know that hormones control everything in the body.
How to do that?
They get relief from these symptoms via estrogen metabolite regulating effects of DIM.
A few milligrams of DIM per day, will modify the estrogen levels in the human body, mainly in women, and will aid to regulate the metabolism, creating a good hormone balance.
Additional weight loss benefits of DIM
The “good” estrogen metabolites along with increased free testosterone promoted by DIM increased fat mobilization and a fat-burning metabolism. The effects of free testosterone in women and men are similar. In each case, testosterone promotes the building of new protein. When hormonal balance shifts to building new proteins, metabolite rate is increased, and fat metabolism is promoted.
Part of the protein-building effect of testosterone is to gear up the cellular enzymes needed to burn fat. Fat contains the stored energy needed to support formation of new proteins as well as the fuel for sustained exercise.
Together with exercise DIM provides the best hormonal balance to create the protein machinery for active fat consumption.
The good estrogen metabolites also directly facilitate the release of stored fat in a number of ways. First, these metabolites assist the specific fat-burning hormones called catecholamines that are produced during exercise to release stored fat.
These released fatty acids circulate in the blood stream as a primary energy source. Second, the “good” estrogen metabolites actually can increase the number of protein receptors for the catecholamines that appear on the surface of fat cells. As circulating catecholamines released during exercise occupy these receptors, stored fat is more actively released from fat cells. DIM and a hormonal balance favoring the “good” estrogen metabolites assists catecholamines in supporting a more active fat-burning metabolism.
Know the facts Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower are a powerful source of phytonutrients they can modify the metabolism of estrogen in men and women, the most interesting component found in these cruciferous vegetables is di-indolylmethane (DIM).
